Entertaining friends and neighbors with your fish

Every time someone new comes over they always ask about my fish as they hear the running water and know I am into the fish hobby.

Today my neighbor came over and asked to see them as she hadn't seen them in a while. I went over to feed one of the Oscars and he started his "happy dance cause its food time" bit. She was real impressed by how much that he, like her dog, acted at the idea of food being served. She started giggling when she realized he recognized the package of food and was "begging" for some.

I then took her into the other room where the other Oscar is located and this one was far more expressive than the first one was. She asked me if they can really recognize the food package. I assured her they could. I let him swim away and then I caught his attention and shook the food package at him. He came right back to "the feeding spot" and danced for more food.

She was dumbfounded and admitted that she never thought of fish as being able to be a "pet" and understood how wrong she had been. When the other fish joined the Oscar in the food begging, she was full of amazement. She was both entertained and educated at the same time without me saying a word!

my cichlids in my 75 gal. do the same thing...before i put food in there i can literally reach in the tank and the lemme pet them with no problems!!! i know it sounds really rediculous but i enjoy them!! i had to replace my 3.5 yr old show quality male blue brindle pitbull with FISH because i moved from a 3/2/2 house to a 1/1 condo!! but yeh the fish have become "family" they have such unique personalities

but when i feed my 6" male electric blue (Sciaenochromis fryeri.) he is a COMPLETE grouch....hes always been the one to cause all the ruckis with the others!!

That's really funny! Fish do seem to have their own personalities and it is funny to watch people who don't keep fish figure that out! There is a youngster from the neighborhood that likes to come in and see a few of my tanks--his favorites are the shrimps. I let him know that I'd be happy to share mine if he got a tank set up for some. We'll see.....he doesn't know that I have a crayfish yet! :evil_lol:

i feed shrimp pellets, algae wafers, and flake every day. my angelfish come over to the front to get pellets, but they only do the wiggle-dance when they see the flake container. they love their flakes.

Yeah I have a couple neighbors who are bad about spending time over at my place just to "check out whats new in the tanks" LOL I think it's great
