plants that stay upright, and grow out of the water

Anubias, java fern, sags, swords, hygros.. lot more than I'll ever know.

Depending on what you're doing, you can also look at marginals.

Make sure your substrate has enough dept to support the plants. Minimum 4 - 5 inch I would suggest. Less will restrict the growth of the plant and it will not have enough mass to support the plants when they move in the water-flow.

most all my stems have grown out of the water at one point or another.

I love mangroves...when you have a lot of them they can look really cool. Plus they grow like crazy everywhere back home in Jamaica.

I seen pictures of some kind of bushy vine plant that grows up and out and back down the sides of the tank, looks very cool.

I had a guy tell me lotus was good for this. I too am wanting a plant to grow out of the aquarium. The aquarium is in a little sunroom and I think it would enhance the look I am going for. Someone else said Papyrus. I was thinking ... the stuff the egyptians wrote hieroglyphs on? hmm. Can't say I've seen it though. Will check back later.
