When I first began with my 29G tank I picked up a package of those bulbs from petco. Well out of about 20 bulbs I got a few of them to sprout atleast. The majority (like with most people from what I've read) Were the smaller hairier bulbs. Now these have been identified in other threads as Aponogeton crispus, but I've been looking up the name and other posts say they should not have floating leaves. Well needles to say mine do. So...

Is it possible that these are actually a differnt species?

Are they a hybrid of Aponogeton crispus and another plant (Something that I've heard possible)

Also if they were a hybrid what is the possibility of them being sterile? Supposedly its high, but I'm starting to see several small green leaves poking up around my tank atm with these being the only possible parents that I can think of.

Other plants I have in the tank are 1 waterlilly, 1 onion plant, (both petco bulbs), and then some vals.

So any thoughts? Oh also pictures that I got before my batteries died. The first is of course the larger plant the second 1 of 2 little ones I just recently discovered.

You'll need to watch those tall growth stalks. If this is Crispus (which I think it is too), then those will become bloom stalks and should be removed right away. With Apons, after the plant blooms and sets seeds, it goes dormant and dies back.

If this is Undulatus (still possible but less likely), that plant rarely blooms at all. What it does is send out adventitious stalks which form numerous plantlets.. the same way sword plants do. In this case, you wouldn't cut them off.

I can't tell what the small sprout plant is in the bottom picture. It's too small to tell for sure. It doesn't look like it's one of the plants you named already. How far away is that from the Apon? Have you accounted for all the bulbs that didn't sprout?

The new plants are in the front of the tank while the older one is directally behind it. There is also a filter in the path so it easily could have pushed the seeds where they are.

I haven't accounted for the bulbs, but I have seen a few of these small plants spring up before. Usually though I accidentally suck them up durring water changes (opps....) They are not attatched to any bulb when this happens.

As of right now all of my plants seem to be doing ok. There are other issues I need to resolve with the tank, but those deal more with getting CO2 actually running and the ferts etc. So I guess I'll watch and see if one of them dies off. Sorry I couldnt geta picture of the flowers. Though they are very small, only a 2-3 MM across. What the flower must be is just a small bit of white on the tops of the stalks. Usually the flowering part sticks about 1-1.5 inches out of the water and that portion is covered with them.

i have one of these too and its gone nuts! it took forever to get it to sprout, but boy did it take off. it even split its bulb into 3 (the original and 2 smaller ones) all have bloomed, but it seems they are continuing to put up leaves and flowers

Hmm...when you found the new bulbs did you just pull up the plant and see them? Then take them off of the mother plant and replant? I'm curious now about getting some more of these.
