So I am going to vacuum and do a water change in my tank...

I go to the tank to get water to test before I do the change and I notice the two flame gourami's I have are circling each other as if they are mating. I guess I have a male and a female..... I also thought I saw a few tiny round eggs floating around them.

Also I notice that one of them has taken on a darker grey cast to its back end.

Now I'm afraid to do the water change and vacuum. I'm afraid I'll vacuum up any eggs (if there are any) or wreck the obviously perfect water parameters for gourami mating.

What should I do? It's time for my 2 week maintenance on the tank.

Having read up on Gourami mating habits, I am confused.

I read that the male builds a bubblenest and then they mate and he collects the eggs and tends to the nest (like a betta).

There is no bubblenest in the tank, so what the heck are these two doing? It certainly looks like they are mating.

Any clues?

Yeah gouramis are bubblenest builders just like bettas. If you dont see a little mass of tiny bubble floating somewhere at the surface of your tank, then the gouramis haven't gotten the parenting skills down yet.
;)

The eggs will die if they aren't in the nest, so its probebly safe for you to vaccuum the gravel. If you notice a nest, try not to disturb it because the eggs fall out very easily. If your gouramis mated once then it is most likely they will do it again, so dont worry.
