Hey everyone,
I have two stems of Hygro difformis that I rescued from practically nothing three months ago. Now they are about 6 inches long and getting wide. I'd like to propagate them, but I'm not sure how.
My Hygro polysperma is easy to propagate since a new growing point comes out at practically every leaf node. However, the H. difformis is just one, unbranched stem. Do I just cut a three inch (or so) section and plant the tip? Will this promote branching of the bottom section? Also, should I wait until they are larger in order to take cuttings?
Thanks!
Melanie

For me, I can chop mine to shreds and they will grow from just the pieces that are left. Also, if you break off any little branches, they should grow roots there. Or, you could just let it keep growing until its a little bigger. You can also lay it horizontally in the gravel and try to get it growing that way, then, roots will sprout from each node. I have it growing like that in the 55g that it shown in my signature.
btw, you're the first other person I've seen from NH! :) Whats your general area if you don't mind me asking? I'm in the seacoast area:)

Hey that's good news! They sound like they're pretty indestructable, but I wanted to check first before making that fateful cut :)
I'm in the Seacoast area too! Dover actually. I've seen one other guy from Newmarket on AC....actually bought my 72 gallon from him, but he has since moved and hasn't been on the forum.
Anyways, great to "meet" you...you'll have to tell me your fave fish store. I've only been in the hobby for about 1.5 years and have yet to find a good one around here. Where are they hiding??

Holy Poop! I live in Dover too! Right near the Irving on 155. That is SO wierd! wow.
There are no real good stores around here (as you know! LOL). Usually I go to the Petquarters or Petco in Portsmouthbut I just went to one in Salem called SeaWorld and was really impressed. They had a LOT of fresh and saltwater stuff and fish. I suggest you check it out. Also, sometimes I just drive to the Petco in Manchester...they usually have a wider selection of fish (with ich included of course;)).
Maybe I'll be seeing you around! lol

Small world :) You're not too far from me...I'm on Rt 108 by the high school. I have heard that there are some nice stores in the Salem area. I just met a friend of a friend who is into aquariums. They live in Plaistow and have some really interesting fish in their various tanks....stuff I've never even seen on websites. They go to a place in Salem...probably the one you mentioned. I will have to check that out. But, like you, I usually go to petquarters or petco. Once in a while I find good stuff at little critter pet center in Exeter, but I think their fish section is smaller since they moved. Plus they are a little drive (not like Salem though :) ). Nice to know there are other hobbyists close by!
