View Full Version : Getting in new sulawesi shrimp today

And boy am I nervous!!! I naturally have hard water (ph of 8.0, gh of 8, kh of 9-10) so i have had to alter it a bit to get the parameters where i *think* they need to be. i am getting in brilliant bees, no scientific name provided. I have set up a 20g long with about 16g of tap water and 2.5 gallons of distilled in order to achieve a ph of 8.0, gh of 5, and a kh of 7. its still a little on the high side for kh. These shrimp supposedly appreciate a pH of 8.2, gh and kh of 4-6. I am hoping this will work out. so far, i do not have it decorated beyond a piece of porous rock and am adding some indian almond leaf litter as well. it cost me a fortune to import these guys so everyone cross your fingers they arrive alive and that i can keep them that way!! I will post pics once they are here and acclimated. If anyone is keeping these shrimp, please shout out the params you have had luck keeping them alive and hopefully breeding. Any relative experiences are welcome!

No Experiences, but good luck! Im sure they will be happy in their new home!

From what I've gathered TDS is more critical than the pH. If you don't have an electronic meter to measure TDS the next best thing is to test the GH. You want the tank water to be higher than the shipping water, not lower (identical is very unlikely in any case) to prevent osmotic shock.

Good luck! I hope they survive and you can breed them. Glad you were able to find a reliable source for them.

But then by the end it turned out all right ;)

Good link :)

well, i only got in 20 of the 40 i ordered....the other half got accidentally shipped to cali. The 20 i got don't all appear to be what I ordered, sigh. at least 5-7 of them are brilliant bees, the others look like caridina species, maybe caridina virginia and red tail blue pearl bees or caridina carolina. Its very frustrating. Anyway here are some pics during acclimation, one good thing is only 2 doa.
As you can see, i had some berries hatch en route:

the ones to the right are the brilliant bees:

jamesstill84
03-13-2009, 5:50 PM
Sorry you didn't get the full order and that what you did get wasn't exact. I'm still to sketchy to order any. I have found on shrimpnow.com that they have a full section dedicated to Sulawesi shrimp. Several people on that forum have been able to breed the Cardinals. Not sure about the Bee's that you received. Worth looking into?

jpappy789

That blows!

I would be furious, but the actual Sulawesi look amazing!

i added these onto my transhipping order for the nerites at the last minute, figured what the hey would give it a try. hopefully it can be made right.

mellowvision
03-13-2009, 6:49 PM
the shrimp all look great. it's really too bad about the shipment. especially because you don't know who bred with who.

looks like you got some of what this site's calling yellow cheek bees... http://www.aristocratama.com/gallery/breeding.html

I've had my eye out for those for a while, but know nothing about them really.

msjinkzd
03-13-2009, 6:54 PM
i am goign to look at them closer tomorrow. so far only 2 dead out of 20, which is pretty darn good for sulawesi. All in all, even if i keep them as a mish mosh, they are neat. i was just hoping to be able to document and record more about them.

snoopy65
03-13-2009, 6:56 PM
They are pretty cool looking.....if you decide you don't want them, I will let you give them to me.........Just cause I am a nice girl!

jamesstill84
03-13-2009, 6:57 PM
If they end up breeding for you, i'm sure my wife would be interested in getting some.

i already have several berried females, and 2 of them already hatched. i expect to have lots of babies :)

03-13-2009, 7:13 PM
I know exactly how you feel! I stress over all my babies fish, dog and invert alike especially when they are new. If I even walk by a tank and they are acting "funny" I will worry that something is wrong sometimes. Usually itis nothing but I still will check the water , keep and extra eye to see if I have missed some obscure sign off illness. My husband says I don't have hobbies I have ulcers in the making!! Ha! If he only knew.....:perv:

mellowvision
03-13-2009, 7:39 PM
do you have room to seperate the species? might be a profitable screw up in the end, if you end up with colonies of several species...

msjinkzd
03-13-2009, 7:41 PM
well i have about 700 or more snails coming in as well, so i can't really set up multiple tanks for their screw up right now :(

Good luck with them shrimp Rach...

I had some too..

msjinkzd
03-13-2009, 7:56 PM
well, i am hoping they will do well as i have a special tank with special params just for them, lmao. I tested their source water (not relying on the ph from ammonia) and i have a pretty good match. Cross yoru fingers for me!

They are acclimated to someone elses tank :( After they have a bit of time to recover from their journey, its likely they will be sent back to me. We have not worked out teh details yet.

Oh man, that really sucks, Rachel. I skipped over this thread for a while because I wanted to wait and see the great photos without getting all nervous about them too. Now.. it's just so disappointing... for you, for all of us, and for those poor shrimp who ended up in the wrong place.

msjinkzd
03-15-2009, 7:09 AM
AND my nerite shipment was delayed AGAIN. It will end up coming in a week late. They are not lost in the mail, just not on their way to me. This was a very expensive and frustrating endeavor!

I am so sorry for your frustration!
Is the nerite delay at the place of origin?
If it helps any, we all love you!

Hi,

I'm the Dutch guy ....and i see that some of you have read my thread already.....

I have now at least 50 young ones out 2 adult......

Yesterday I saw 2 berried cardinals from the first generations shrimps ( born at 11 january )

I have also the Yellow Cheek....bought them 3 weeks ago ( 11 p)....still alive...

Later this week.......the Harlekine and the Red Orchid will follow....

I'm having a second tank already.....its running...must wait 2 more weeks.....

Later on I wil post some picture

msjinkzd
04-21-2009, 6:10 AM
I still have the ones that came in, alive and doing fine as well. Unfortunately only 4 of htem were teh correct species out of what I ordered. I will try and get some pics at some point, I forgot about this thread. I plan on trying more shrimp again soon, I just have been focusing on the nerites first :)

o.O I'd love to see more pix! Did you ever get this resolved?

Plan on selling any at some point? *Hint hint* *nudge nudge* ;)
