besides my angelfish, i know nothing about cichlids in general... but i was wondering how aggressive most of them were, and if there were any that were small enough and calm enough to be kept in a 55 community tank? or any small enough to start a cichlid tank in a 30?

Bolivian or german rams would work for either.

Kribs would be ok but not the electric yellows as they would be to aggressive.

Krib's would be fine in a 30, but you would need a 55 or larger for a group of yellow Lab's.
It wouldn't be a good idea to mix the two regardless of tank size though. Krib's are river fish, Lab's are rift lake fish with different water chemistry preferences.

Shouldn't be any problems if the stocklist in your signature is current. If you want a breeding pair get 5-6 juvies then swap off the extras after you have an established pair.

Could look into Apistogramma's as well.
I have an Apistogramma Agazziz in my 30, I also have a German Blue ram in there.
So far no problems, but most people would advise against them in the same tank.

Depends on the fish itself. Watch their behavior with their tank mates at the petstore. Also, keep a 1:2 ratio. Rule of thumb with cichlids. 1 male for 2 females. :)

Yellow labs are really nice mellow fish. I had a breeding pair in my 55gal. Peacock tank and they all got along just fine, Even during the 4 times she was holding and had her babies..
Also had a breeding pair in my 55gal. Mumba tank to. Never had any problems in that tank either..
Plus they are beautifull fish..
Good luck
