Awesome, ordering tonight!
wow, 20% calcium content. Might have to try these, but it might be hard breaking them off the jello though.

no need to bemutually exclusive. I had talked to ken about formulating this because i know especially for people who have one or two snails, its not always practical to make the jello. I also thought it would be nice to have a dry food available geared to snails. I was really happy when he said he would formulate it :)

This is also awesome for turtles! :)
Mine's still a baby (and therefore fairly carnivorous), but this would be golden for herbivorous land turtles or adult aquatics. We're always struggling to get enough calcium into 'em. In fact, Jinkzd, your snail jello recipes inspired me to make turtle jello! Dandelion greens, red leaf lettuce, green leaf lettuce, salmon, and calcium powder. Yum yum!

I officially tried this stuff today. The shrimp and snails seem to love it. It's a nice size, and the green color really makes amano poop sing! lol.
a by product: the otos like it more than algae wafers. one of mine looks like he rolled around in it, got green specs all over him! lol.

Now that would be wonderful if it happens. I still never see some nerites and the trapdoors eat except algae.:screwy:

Mine do eat certain brands of spirulina pellets, though I'd certainly love a pellet that's also high in calcium. If any of you try them with the pickier snails, let me know how it goes.
At least he isn't calling it "invert pellets". If the pickier Nerites don't eat it, I'd probably be nitpicking about how it shouldn't be called "invert pellets". Hehe..

just want to let everyone know that my little nerite was eating some veggie stick today and it is the first time i've ever seen him go for anything other then algae. My snails and RCS come swarming when i drop those sticks in.

Clithon corona or Neritina juttingae?
vampie

Judging by her other threads, Clithon corona.
Are Neritina juttingae being traded around the hobby again? Seems like it's been ages.

Certainly nice to see the hobby moving into less common snails.

A little late to this thread, but this is awesome. This will be great for my crayfish, it's been very hard finding foods that had any decent amount of calcium in them. I've been having to add weird things to supplement them (eggshells, cuttle bone, etc), which have been making a mess of my tanks. ...granted, I'll still have to do this for the ones that insist on almost entirely meat diets, but hey, they rest should love these things. ^_^

After a few days of observation, I gotta say, it's not like the crystal reds hate it, but they definitely seem to prefer the crab cuisine to the new ken's food. maybe out of habit, maybe out of scent... but they gravitate to it much more quickly. the trumpet snails, otos, and amanos however, seem to love it.

I don't know about you guys. But I don't think I can afford it and I just feed all of my non-filter feeding invertebrates shrimp pellets.
bettabrat
03-16-2009, 12:51 PM
It's $9 for a lb. I think even this overworked and unpaid chick can afford that. I ordered mine Sunday hopefully it's in the mail. :D :D :D

I can not say enough good things about this food. Yesterday one of my friends came over my house and was looking at my invert tank, everyone was hiding or in the back and all i had to do was throw a few veggie sticks in and everyone came running to the front of the tank, its so funny to see a herd of RCS in the front of the tank.

How big are the sticks? I should probably break them in half being I have 20 or so shrimp in one tank and 11 or so in the other? Are they the same size as his earthworm, cichlid, vegie sticks? Mine are in the mail hope I get them tomorrow I can't wait LOL!
KatelynC

They are about a quarter to half an inch, it varies. some smaller some bigger.

I have to say that my inverts with exception to my marbled brats all love this new food. My cory cats even seem to like snacking on it LOL I'd be up for trying out catfish pellets too. Ah I love to hate Kens ;)

03-24-2009, 2:38 PM
Is that the really low-priced one? That could be make for a great economy pellet for invert keepers.
All this kind of makes regret stocking up on those earthworms sticks back in January.
msjinkzd
03-24-2009, 2:53 PM
The reason we initially did the veggie sticks with the added calcium is that there are no preservatives used in its manufacturing. The catfish sticks have a small amoutn of one preservative.

IDK it cost me $9 for a lb seemed reasonable to me :thm:

I got some too. My fishies and my inverts love it! I see so many MTS after I drop a few pellets in I have to wonder where they all hide during the day :) Even my twins (yes 5 y/o human twins) had a taste and approved heartily of it's flavor. It was not one of Ken's least expensive foods, but definitely well worth the cost!

I was speaking of the $1.75 catfish pellets.. I was just saying if that's the one he's adding calcium to without raising the price too far, it'd be a very economical invert food.
msjinkzd
03-24-2009, 4:07 PM
He may have to raise the price a little, from what he told me, he had to try several types of calcium supplements (powders, liquids, etc) to get a nice mix in the food. The one he ended up using, a liquid, is very costly which is why the sticks are a little more expensive than the plain ones.
vampie
03-24-2009, 4:29 PM
Comparing the 1/2lb prices, the veggie sticks are a whole $3 higher than the catfish pellets. If the added calcium doesn't close the gap too much, it could be a very good option for the average invert keeper.

The snails seem to love it!
Now if I could just keep the young guppies from mobbing them for the food.
