I know nothing about them, but was wondering if there were any types of cichlid that are small enough to live in a five gallon tank and/or peaceful enough to co-exist with tankmates such as shrimp or african dwarf frogs. I've read that rams are small and peaceful, but I believe they need larger tanks to thrive.

Just curious.

Badis badis. That's about the only thing that'll fit there. Not a cichlid but looks like one.

Dario dario looks and acts like a small, peaceful cichlid. I think they can be kept in a 5g.

I hate living in a fish desert. There's practically nothing in this area that's not a common fish. I wish I had access to a wider fish selection.

Check out www.aqua-bid.com. Some of the sellers include free shipping.

I ordered some Kuhli and Red Tailed Loaches from there and was very satisfied. The seller even threw in some Endler's Livebearers for free.

Yeah, I go there all the time, but I'm mostly a window shopper. I did get my MTS there though. I ordered some cherry shrimp from here this week, so we'll see how that shipment goes. I just get so nervous about the poor things bein shipped (I know some people who work for places like FEDEX and UPS so I hear how some of those packages get treated). I'm old school, which, I guess, means paranoid.

Cherry Shrimp ship very well. I had no DOA and they came from PA to KY.

Be nice to cichlids and don't put them in anything smaller than 25gal. They love to roam and be free..:)

Not all cichlids have the same tank size requirements. There are some african species (shelldwellers) for instance that can work in tanks as small as ten gallons.

Nah but the topic is small peaceful cichlids.

5 gallon is too small...

But for bigger aquariums, apistogramma's and rams work well.

NO cichlid will work in a 5g tank....

I dont even agree with putting smaller types in a 10g tank-- even though it can work out

The only possibility is a pair of multies. Thats if you have nothing else, plenty of shells and near perfect water conditions.

I was just curious. I built a cave out of smooth river stones. I put a dwarf gourami in the tank and saw him hiding in the cave. It struck me as the perfect type of shelter for most cichlids.

I've never kept a cichlid before, so I thought I'd investigate for the future in the event that I ever restock this tank.
