I wish my goldfish and koi would have babies already. I have a ton of pond plants that the babies can hide in. Yet I have a ton of minnows invading my pond and they have kids all the time. Could this be the reason why my goldfish and koi are not having babies?

I have the opposite problem... Mine have laid eggs atleast a dozen times, if not more. I'm begining to not know what to do with all of the babies... Hundreds not even an inch long yet.

well the larger minnows would probably eat the eggs/babies

I have had a koi pond for more than 5 years with NO babies whatsoever. Is that normal? Thought I would have had at least one set of babies. 13 koi can't all be either male or female. Thanks.

Overcrowding fish and stunting them will stop them from reproducing. The fish are not healthy enough to spawn. Making babies takes a lot of energy and effort out of an organism.
Also not having suitable conditions for the fish to spawn in (plants, water motion, temperature, etc) will also inhibit them from spawning. For example my goldfish are healthy and fat with plenty of room. I've got two females right now that are large with eggs. However I just moved the tank and it is bare with no plants, or substrate. So even thought the fish are healthy enough and there is a lot of courting going on I haven't seen any eggs yet.

Thanks, the fish are definitely overcrowded. You may be right about the no babies yet. I will think about my options for a better environment for the fish. Koigarden

If you can, separate the males and females and condition them for about two weeks or so. Choose a heavily gravid female and two or three active males and place them into a tank with lots of spawning substrate like floating plants with dense root systems or artificial substrates. If everything is right, spawning will occur very early in the morning a couple of hours before daybreak. Immediately after spawning, you must remove all the breeders, otherwise, they will feast on the eggs and leave you with almost nothing. Or, you can transfer the laden substrates to another tank or aquarium and wait for the eggs to hatch in 2-3 days. In the community pond that you have, you may be lucky enough to see some eggs on the substrates that you can transfer. Check on this very early in the morning especially if you hear some fish splashing. Good luck.

:welcome: to AC!
Yes, that is true although even hybrids occur. Here are some information compiled regarding differentiating goldfish, hybrids and koi.:)

Thanks for the info. I am not upset about no babies, just wondering. I have two ponds now so maybe something will happen. I do notice that the fish are very active from time to time, especially in the early morning. Maybe something is going on!!! Thanks, koigarden

you say they're active in the morning.... are they flopin around with eachother in plants? That's what mine did before they laid eggs... to ensure survivors, I left the plants in for 3 days after seeing the initial floping and then moved them to another location. not I have atleast 13 that are close to an inch long and maybe 30ish that are smaller.
Oh, and a very small batch of eggs on my iris plant... I put that in a bucket of water with an airator.

The minnows or the goldies and Koi are eating the eats and/or fry. My goldfish spawn every spring w/o any surviving fry. The parents or my channel cat eat any and all eggs. I don't mind since it is a nice protein load for my fish and helps gets they digestion going. I have in the past used Water lettuce or Hyacinth since they have a good root system for spawning. I just remove the plants and place them in a tank w/well oxygenated water and a little meds to prevent fungus. Wigglers appear in a few days.
