I have a 5 gallon hex I plan on keeping a few little fish, a single apple snail, and some cherry shrimp in. I am going to have a little driftwood display in the center, and I want to attach an easy care, somewhat slow growing moss to it. I would like one that won't consume my tank if I don't trim it for a couple of weeks. I would also like it to not grow too thick or high, just a nice covering of the wood. The tank will get plenty of light, and the temperature will be kept around 75 F, with a slightly basic pH.
Thank you for your help!!!

Hi.. gee, that doesn't narrow this down very much. Except for Java Moss which grows rather wild and unruly.. most other mosses do exactly what you described. The best way to pick the one you like most would be to look through some Google images at other tank pics. Just compare the textures and growth forms from one type of moss to another. After doing this for a while, you'll begin to see very distinct differences between them. If you do this and can't quite decide between a few mosses, let us know. I'm sure we coulld all post some examples for you to look at.

Hmm, I found one that looks promising. Anyone know/have experience with Fissidens?

Yes.. very soft and delicate. That would look good.. does well in a wide range of conditions, too. F. Fontanus is also called Phoenix Moss. There's another Fissidens too.. F. Zippelianus. That's a more erect variety they call Zipper Moss.

Awesome! Sounds like this is what I want. Thank you for your help, Kashta! I really appreciate it.

Java moss

Problem with java is that it apparently grows super fast and will eat your tank alive if you don't watch it. I'm looking for low maintenance, not too long growing, not too fast growing.
