adding a canister to a cycled aquarium

HI,
i cant seem to find any info about replacing a power filter with a canister to a 55g

have a link for me to read?
or

just let me ask,:
should i run both for a few weeks? or just watch ammonia levels everyday and chage water when needed until a new cycle is complete?
or
are there some tricks to this i just am not thinking of....?

btw, for under $300 what is the very most quiet canister? EhiemproII ?
sorry, the aquaeon power filter humm is really getting on my nerves...
 
Yep, just start up the canister, I would let them both run for two weeks or so before removing the HOB.
 
As posted set up the canister and run it, two filters on a 55 would be beneficial, AC's are generally very quiet, could it just need a new part, some covers vibrate a little also.........:)
 
If you can move the media out of the HOB and into the Eheim you should be good to go right away. Yes get a Pro II- I have 2 of them for a number of years and they are super quiet- the one running for 6+ years and having pressurized co2 pushed through it as well is still so quiet you have to touch it to know its on.

Just running 2 filters side by side in the same tank basically ends up splitting the bacteria you already have between them- it doesn't result in more bacteria. So when you move it over the odds are good if you dont also move over the fish responsible for about 1/2 the bio load, you will get spikes in both tanks.
