HARTFORD, Conn. - A 36-year-old Swedish countess divorcing a former CEO says she cannot live on $43 million.
Marie Douglas-David, a former investment banker, says she has no income and needs her 67-year-old husband, George David, to pay her more than $53,000 a week — more than most U.S. households make in a year — to cover her expenses.
David stepped down last year as chief executive at Hartford-based United Technologies Corp. but is still chairman of the board and has an estimated net worth of $329 million. He and his wife accuse each other of extramarital affairs. Their divorce trial started Wednesday.

I live in CT. I'm working on a bachelor's degree and two minors. I make minimum wage. I can pay rent, eat Maruchan Ramen, and put 5 gallons of gas in my car once a week.
Take her out back and beat her with the garden hose till she starts making some common sense.

Sad that some have no point of reference to base their reality on. I say both of them should be forced to live on the 53K for a year to get some perspective.

If Larry Fortensky can sue Liz Taylor to keep him in the lifestyle in which he had become accustomed then why shouldn't she?

Let's look at this he is 67 no offense but that is not a real safe age to place bets on how long they will live.
So let's say he makes it 10 years to 77 @ 53,000 a week that only equals 27,560,000
Don't know about you but I would hedge my bet and run with the 43 mil. He would have to make it 15.6 years before she would get more than the 43 mil offered upfront.
Now after lawyer fees she will probably only get 2.7 mil takehome.:silly:

It's not so much why shouldn't she, as why does she really feel that $53,000 a week is not enough? I mean seriously, $53,000 a week is not enough to live on? and its not like that is living pay check to pay check, that's living in plenty of luxury.

thats such a bs line...who cares what you get accustomed to, if situations change, why should someone else be liable for maintaining your preferences? I mean, if its a question of eating or not eating, then sure, money should be exchanged...but if someone is saying "well i used to eat filet mignon every night but now i can only afford strip steak, so someone here needs to make up the difference...since I add no value to society myself its sure not going to be me"

How about both forced to live on 53K between them.

Wow. That is rather unreal... Can't imagine thinking you need more money when you have that much... How would she need that much a week? Wiping her butt with gold TP?

I live on less than $5K USD a year.
Give all of her money to American college students, they are the most impoverished group in the United States.

Wow, I grew up in poverty, (like 800$ a month) In Southern Ca, This woman makes me sick. I hope she ends up in a bum camp! There are people out there who cannot afford to eat after they pay rent, who the hell does she think she is? She needs to sit down and watch "Angela's Ashes" humble her out...Jesus! I remember having top ramon for breakfast lunch and dinner! (and yes my mother tried hard for us, and never did drugs or drank)

When I was small, we had the Shrimp flavor for most meals. I called it "Pink Soup" because of the packaging.
What a silly little boy was I.
...it remains 'comfort food' to this day, which I suppose is lucky, as long as I keep taking multivitamins.

Makes me sick. She should get nothing for being so greedy. 53k a week? I dont know if I would even be able to spend that much if I wanted to!!!!!
My husband and I are both students with a 2 yr old, and live on about 20k a year!! We live very comfortable, she makes me sick.
She should have to do a certain amount of community service every week in order to get her weekly check.

I'm kind of moving in the opposite direction. I don't think redistributing her ex-husband's wealth because she made an outlandish statement is fair. I understand that her statement can be taken as semi-offensive, but she is also making it in order to win more money in the divorce case...now to say that she doesn't deserve to maintain her lifestyle because she is no longer married to the guy, I can get with that, but to say that they should both lose all of their money because she says something like that is kind of 1984ish. Look, the statement is moronic and might offend some, but it seems like we could pull it back a bit. And as for the statement that college students are the most impoverished group, I can't really see that. If someone were to redistribute their wealth for these statements (heaven forbid!), I'm seeing the homeless as people who might need it more.

Usually when money is obtained like that, they spend it because they have no value of a dollar because they didnt earn it.
Maybe this is a good idea, the economy could always use the boost.
