If I ever get about 2 acres of land, I was thinking about putting fancy goldfish of all sorts in a one acre pond. I was thinking about hiring a bulldozer to get it made. I want the pond to be no deeper than 5 and a half feet deep. I have two fancy goldfish outside right now and they survived the whole winter. Is it okay to have fancy goldfish outside? Some tell me no, but some tell me yes if the pond is at least 3 feet deep. What do you guys think?

Some of the fancies aren't going to do well in a pond environment, Jelly. This is going to depend on which ones you have in mind for this. And it's not just a matter of eyesight or swimming ability, very few of them are hardy enough to cope with outdoor winter temperatures. Not to mention competition for food against each other when mixed together - the pond fish will always win out... an intolerance for wide temperature changes, and the obvious digestive problems the fancies would have simply from their anatomical differences.

A better choice for goldies as pond fish would be to stay with the goldfish types that have been bred for that. The fancies were cultivated and are still bred for show tanks, as novelties, and for collectors.

What do I mean
Ok here is a list of things to think about. Water supply stream or well for a one acre pond you need something close to 10gl a min to keep up with the daily loss
The cost of well drilling is running a $100 a foot

Pond liner or ramed earth a one acer liner is a big chunk of change ramed earth is cheep but plant roots cause damage that will need repair

Pond overflow give you an idea think 2in of rain fall an hour for one hour over the surface of a one acer pond.you need a way to move that much water and a place to drain it off once moved. Just a few things to think about

That 's interesting McLendon. When the time comes I'll keep all of these things in mind. I mean everything from what you last said. The well drilling, the ramed earth and pond liner & some place to drain excess water. That was a lot of information I needed to know. Thanks a bunch. But anyways, I wonder if koi would be okay in a one acre pond. I think they are actually prettier and more colorful than fancy goldfish. I know that I've seen many places with a ton of koi in their ponds. What do you think?
