How about a Siamese Algae Eater, It is plant safe BUT if can grow to a length of 6". It will coexist peacefully with your Betta

29g is too small for an SAE.

Of course, figuring out why you have algae in the first place is always the first step, however, that being said it really depend on the type of algae.

These are the algae eaters I have in my tanks:

Otocinclis
SAE
Rubberlip pleco
Nerite snail
Red Cherry Shrimp
Amano shrimp
Platies/Mollies
Flag fish

All are plant safe and chew down algae

bettas will eat otos and most shrimp. a BN or rubberlip might work, they get to 4-6 in, make sure it's big enough to fight back before you put it in there. also, most suckermouths like fast moving water, and bettas like slow... shouldn't be a huge problem, just find a happy medium.. some say a 29 is too small for a siamese/chinese algae eater, i dunno. They get to 6-8 in, so it might be. They get agressive, but that can be good with a betta. algae scraper prolly is your best bet...

the betta would probably leave the oto's alone (never had any problems the combo at least). i think also with full grown shrimp you would be fine but don't expect any shrimp lets. again from experience he basically left any full grown shrimp in my tank alone but baby shrimp where another mater. also Amano shrimp are tuff little bugers and get pretty big my shrimp standards so i woudn't worry about them with a betta ether.

all in all thought i think you really need to figure out what is causing the algea in the first place then fix that part of the tank.

i agree, scope out and see what is causing the algae to grow and fix that problem, snails do an awesome job and are a lot of fun!
