I just found a few teeny tiny white shrimp-looking critters in one of my tanks. I know they're some kind of "pod" and the bit of research I did suggests that they're amphipods (just based on the shrimp-like look), but the almighty Wikipedia tells me that most amphipods are saltwater. I know 'pods are generally considered harmless and good food for fishies, so I'm not worried, but I'm curious of freshwater amphipods are actually a rarity or if I'm misunderstanding the Wiki article. Anybody?

Gammarus, also known as Scuds, are somewhat common freshwater amphipods, and I'd have to assume that's what you have. They could hitch in on plants, and some people raise them as live food.
