View Full Version : Cherry barbs for thread algae

I have been advised by someone to use charry barbs as a way to combat my thread algea outbreak. What do you guys know about this? Has anyone succesfully used them for this reason? I read the post where it mentions rosy barbs and gold barbs but I would like to use cherry barbs because of their smaller size. Also do you know if cherry barbs could be used as a dither fish. There are some shy fish in my tank.

I had cherry barbs a few years ago, but don't remember them paying too much attention to algae, which I also had a lot of a few years ago.
I have always heard that rosy barbs are better for algae control. If you do get any, make sure to consider what they will eat AFTER the algae is gone. If you have plants, they will be the next target.

Well I have plants I think I will give the cherry barbs a try and see what happens. thanks for the info.

I have and use Chery Barbs for filamentous algae. They are much smaller and far less disruptive/aggressive than Rosy Barbs, and never disturb or eat the plants - but I do not keep any fine-leafed stem plants, so can't say if they would nibble on those.
