I have a 10G tank that I once used for livebearers until I got my 29G. I want to turn my 10G into a little cichlid tank (what better way to get rid of some guppy fry). I was wondering what cichlids would do ok. I really only want like 2. Also, should I switch over to sand and what other equipment would I need other than what I currently have. My local water has a high pH of 8.0 and a KH of 26 degrees.

This sounds like the perfect tank for some Shell Dwellers. Maybe a pair of Lamprologus Ocellatus or a trio (1M, 2F) of Neolamprologus multifasciatus.

For information on these shell-dwellers and others this link (http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/shelldweller_corner.php) will have lots of useful information.

I also have a 10 gallon tank that I just put into cycle for some new fish... I wanted to try some fairy cichlids, but would a 10 gallon be sufficient for starters? I guess I have the same question as JCason... I am not sure what I can find here where I live, being that I have never seen any of the "shellies" you mentioned...

Aloha!

Their not africans, but you might want to try some blue rams or similiar dwarf cichlids. If you don't plan to breed, you probably could have 1.... maybe( I only say maybe because I haven't tried) 2 Julidochromis transcriptus in a 10. You could probably have 2 female kribensis in a 10 too.

Most Apistogram species would go well in a 10 too.

I had cichlids in a ten before. It worked out pretty good. Defiantly no more than two. Yellow Labs ten to stay smaller. I had a red zebra in mine. That's my favorite.
