I found some free equipment on craigslist and was lucky enough to get it. The protein skimmer is a AquaC Remora Nano with the maxijet 900. I tested it and turns out the pump doesn't work(no biggie). Can I use any other powerhead with this protein skimmer?

I also grabbed a Current Metal Halide. I couldn't find the model number but I think its 24" one. Not sure if it's 150 or 150 watts. It didn't come with the ac adapters for the LEDs but i tested it with some ac adapters I found around the house and they work.

Right now I have the Lights on my 10g brackish and the protein skimmer is sitting in the closet until I get my powerhead. I just have a few questions.

1. What else would I need to convert my brackish tank into a full salt?( Most likely FOWLR)
2. Would I still need to use a power filter if I use the protein skimmer and a Korilla?

Any other feedback is appreciated. Thanks

well i just finished today making a 10 FOWLR tank. i used 10 pounds of LR, synthetic sea salt, a hydrometer(dont buy, annoying, unaccurate, cheaply made get a refractometer) and play sand for substrate. i have a 20 watt CFL bulb and an incandescent bulb on it for lighting. i used a power head and 2 hobs for movement/filtration didnt use a skimmer would probly b better 2 use if u it. hope this helps

Thanks a lot for the response. In my brackish tank right now I'm using crushed coral so could I add LR to that? I already have a hydrometer so should I still buy a refractometer?

Well sure... the meter is your best bet.

I think you should take a min and look up how to set up a saltwater tank.

My basic advise is:
Determine what you want first..reef .....fish...both.. it does make a difference in equipment we would suggest.

Now setting up a reef tank:
use a tank that has never been treated with copper based meds ever.(another thread prompted this warning).

if you plan on using substrate...buying sand I recommend over CC...put in bucket rinse it and stir it as dust flows out ...after flow out is clear...sand is clean.

Now you have sand ready time for rock placement.

Get the tank up by placing base rock in first...then sand.. Then LR,DeadRock, Or any rock thats safe..doesnt have to be live... same with sand.

Now fill with pre mixed ro salt water....

now visit the local grocery... buy a beer and one prawn...fresh one.. drop prawn in tank...drink beer and wait for cycle =)
