i am fairly new to the fish hobby...six months

i have:
5 tiger barbs
1 algae eater
2 black phantom tetras
2 cardinal tetras
1 neon tetra
1 blue dwarf gourami
2 peppered cory catfish

that is my starting lineup all reside in a 20 gallon tank

Hi Sinistersaint! Cool stock you have there. I'd get some more cories though, they like the company (like 4 or 5).

Do the tetras you have school together? I had a Dwarf Gourami with some tetras but the gourami kept giving them a hard time and even hurt a few, i ended up having to chose... I went with the gourami.

yeah its weird the phantom tetras school together, but one of the cardinals schools with the neon and leaves the other cardinal alone. the gourami does not even come close to them i think its because he is occupied with the barbs

I'd consider getting a few more cories to complete a school. I also might focus on one tetra and getting that tetra species going as a nice school.
