I'm trying to find some new substrate to replace my play sand in my 55 gallon. I'm looking for something black or dark brown. I have looked at Tahitian Moon sand but I'm not sure how safe it is for my cichlids since it's made of glass. It also says it's not good for bottom dwellers and I have catfish. I've also looked into colorquartz but no distributors are anywhere near me and shipping is outrageous. So I'm looking for more option, something i just haven't thought of yet.

TMS is okay for cichlids and bottom dwellers. It's an inert product made from extruded sand. No rough edges at all.

Ditto what Kashta said. I was looking in to getting black sand last fall and was going to get Tahitian Moon Sand (I also have bottom dwellers). I just didn't because of budget constraints. I never saw anything about it being made of glass. It's just sand.

Petsmart carries the moon sand and I looked it up on my forum and saw some of the problems. I'll look into it a bit more.

I haven't heard of Aquaterra black sand I'll look into that.

Pool filter sand in white and I can't find it anyway. Like I said in my first post colorquartz is no where near me. There are no distributors in my area and shipping is a bit much.

I have 3M Color Quartz in black, S-grade. It is very fine, but it sinks right back to the bottom when disturbed. It needs to be washed real well and wear gloves because your hands turn black. I don't know where you'd find it in WI though, maybe do a search. I paid $38 for 50 lbs here. You could also try Estes brand also, again it seems hard to find. Here is where I found it...http://store.seacorals.net/esmaortraqsa.html. I have some but have not tried it yet. I did tons of research on this before I bought, I even have a bag of the Tahitian Moon Sand, it is definately sharper edged to the touch. During my research, I also found out that it was not recommended for soft bellied bottom dwellers. Hope this helps.

Here are a couple pics of tank with the 3M.
