Hi I'd like your opinions on this. Should I add live rock into the first chamber along with the protein skimmer?

I'm setting up a reef aquarium. 55 gallons, the sump is 20 long.

Not a bad drawing...
You could put LR in the chamber with the protein skimmer, but it's not necessary unless you're looking for someplace to hold some extra instead of having it in the display tank.

1) Do you need that much water for your skimmer to opertate? Some skimmers seem to operate less efficiently when placed into deeper water.

2) While I realize a 20 long is only so big, keep in mind the chamber with the return pump is where you'll notice the water level change due to evaporation / other loss. In general, it's a good idea to make that chamber as large as possible, without comprimising the functionality of the other chambers.

Thanks, Fsn.

I have no idea really what skimmer I'm going to get and I'm not positive on water levels if they're going to be on point. I can always set it on something inside the sump as well, if that's a problem. Also, my boyfriend is the one who drew this so it was hard trying to explain all of the details without him going WHAT WHAT'S THAT WHY AM I DRAWING IT HERE WHAT ARE THESE LINES FOR??

Mostly, this was for me because of all the different things I've read confusing me.. I needed to actually see something if that makes sense.

He has photoshop, and my paint "skills" are embarrassing.

I will make the return area as large as I can, thanks for the advice.
