went to the lfs and was looking through the stock lists and noticed discus so i decided to look. and wasnt it to my delight to see they were 13$ per!!! the cashier said id probly have to pay 15$ but still thats a good deal(right?) so i was wondering, could i keep 3 discus healthy and happy in my 30g?

No, a 30g tank is way to small and they like to be kept in larger groups.

You can get them, but only if you get a large tank to keep them in. Personally, I'd take the oppertunity; they're 55$ minimum here

I honestly think you get what you pay for with discus. I would get the tank and save up money to get from a local breeder as you will get better stock that way.

I found a place that sells them for $11, they look decent to me. I was very tempted to pick one up to add to mine, but resisted.

30 gallon too small for discus, and as others have said you usually get what you pay for when it comes to discus

You could grow 3 young discus out in a 30G but they'd eventually need a larger tank. If you're seriously considering buying them, do some obervation of them for a while. I'm sure they are not going to go flying out the pet store door momentarily. Check their color. Do they exhibit stress bars. Do they seem dark at all? Get the owner to feed them in front of you, not just once but over a period of several days. Do they eagerly take the food. Do you see any feces, it should be brown. Can you do these things first?

Any pics available ? ............:)

I agree. I tend to be wary when a discus becomes really cheap. Could be stunted or poor in health. A local breeder with a good reputation is always the best source.

I agree !! When you get rock bottom prices , you usually get rock bottom stock. We buy wholesale and 20% of the fish we get we must either try to fix with tons of food or cull. With Discus you only get what you pay for !! There are a few exceptions (sales , private sales etc.)

Deb , Hit the nail on the head as always. :look: Your eyes are the best buying tools when looking to purchase discus along with the basic questions like; how long have they been in the store, have they lost any since they received them etc. ( do not forget to look at their eyes as well)

Hi: New to this forum. I keep; breed and maintain 70+ discus. A 30 gallon for discus is a bit small. The one post about water and water changes is right. The water must be right to maintain discus; most important. Also, great stock to begin with. Simply discus I believe has been taken over by Hans Discus; Hans is a great guy with great stock. One post also said it; you get what you pay for. I do breed and have young; do not sell to pet stores only people that would like to get started or other breeders. There are good breeders out there. Also don't buy anything discus that is fed live food. They have enough things to contend with without adding problems to them. Mine eat flake, NL pellets, beefheart; Hikari frozen. NO live including the fry are fed on Angels Plus starter fry and DCBS eggs. It can be done.
Best.

Al Sabetta (brewmaster) I believe still owns the site. Hans is one of the Sponsors on simplydiscus.com.

I do agree tho.
I do not purchase discus from LFS.
I look for breeders..their seconds are better than the stock I have seen arrive in LFS.
When it comes to discus....Good aint Cheap, and Cheap aint Good. This will hold true for 90% of the time when dealing with discus (same goes for most other fish im sure). Dont buy discus based on price, buy discus based on their health and overall appearance. Because if you dont, the money you saved will go right out the window, and then some, spent on meds and headaches. Healthy fish will give you less trouble long term and will just overall do better.
