Hi --

I'm brand new to this site. Someone at my pet store suggested I come here for help. I have a problem with high Ph levels in my 10 gallon tank and my guppies keep dying. I have 4 tetras right now that seem indestructable. My well water does have a high Ph level, but I've tried treating with 2 different Ph lowering agents. The Ph seems to come down at first, but then goes back up. (Also, when I exchange the water I use at least half bottled water which tests neutral.) I confess got a little lazy about cleaning a few months ago and started using an algaecide. Could that be causing the Ph to rise? Is that how an algaecide works - raising Ph to kill the algae? I'd be so grateful for any help.

Many Thanks -

Welcome to AC! I recommend that you start a thread in the FW forums, giving as much information as you can about your tank. It will allow more folks to help you.

use rain water and have driftwood in your tank and put peat moss in your filter don't use any chemicals to alter you pH it will make the pH change a lot then go back to where it was which is very stessfull to your fish if rain water and driftwood dont work get fish that thrive in high pH water

Hello and welcome!

dont start putting anything in your tank right now (peat, rainwater, ph adjuster, algaecide, etc...). you can start a thread in the freshwater section about your high PH. make sure to list the exact PH and any other water parameters that you might have. Also, do a search on the forum for 'cycling' and read up on cycling a tank and make sure that process was completed.

we will help you get some healthy and happy fish in no time!
