long stroy short i may be aquiring a plate coral and what the guy described as a long green stringy coral that was attached to the LR. how do i take care of plate coral? is it good for a 10 gallon? any idea about the stringy coral?
Hmm, where to start. We are going to need much more information than that. There is only one "plate" coral that I am aware of that matches your description of being "long and stringy" and that is Heliofungia actiniformis. This species can't be recommended for the beginner at all. For whatever reason (I believe it relates to infections), these corals fail to thrive and will often completely die or lose a sizable portion of the living tissue. If this is the coral you are talking about, I would definitely steer clear in your circumstances.
As far as suitable species go, could you give us more info? You say you have a 10g tank, right? What about filtration, lighting, water parameters/chemistry, water motion, maintenance/additive routine, etc.? There's just too little information to make much of a recommendation.
This is part of the monti family correct? Now I agree about knowing more on her tank before I say anything. I almost jumped the gun a min ago.
I’ve found Monti’s to be extremely hardy. And I had grown (slowly) pieces in a 29 biocube…and you know those have not so great lighting. The coral did well but grew so so slow.
Now if she has good lighting and changes water by 50% weekly in that small tank… Would I be ill advising her to say “You can do it”?
I think she might be able to if she has a good water maintenance schedule …only because I maintained that plate coral species in a 29g Bcube.
Or did I just get lucky and raised a coral in a tank that was pushing its limits =)?
sorry i worded that badly they are 2 separate corals. its a standard 10 gallon, with 15 ibs of LR, 2 penguin HOB filter with LR rubble for media, an aquaclear 10 heater set to 81 fahrenheit and 1 powerhead for current. all pur pose sand substrate. also i am a he!
