Hi,
I got my first 55 gallon tank 3 months ago. It came with a top-mounting dual power filter. At the time, I confess I didn't pay enough (or any) attention to the filtration, on the advice of someone who said that you didn't want to change it for a while to let the bacteria build up.
My mistake was that I only put one actual filter pad in the filter. Now, I cycled the aquarium just fine, added 19 fish over time—all of which seem healthy and spritely—and the water has been testing perfectly ever since—all on the one carbon-based filter pad, which is now three months old. I guess I was supremely lucky.
So I just figured out my error today, and hastily added another pad to the other side of the filter. My question is: Are two filter pads enough for a 55-gallon freshwater tank? How long before I should change the original filter pad, now that I have (one) clean one in there too?
Sorry for my idiocy and the complex situation. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Greg
