Mellowvision's thread reminded me I have a junk/mystery moss I've been meaning to get an ID on for a while now, see if it's worth anything to anyone now that it's doing well :P. It has history...

I bought it from Aquatic Magic last summer, was picking up some java ferns and weeping moss through them, and as long I was making an order I bought some of what they call "Plagiomnium affine" because it sounded easy and looks almost ivy-like, so I thought it would look cool draped over my rock cave (http://aqmagic.com/store/product_in...ffine&osCsid=1583986c359d5fb88538ddc242c06206).

After placing the order, I thought to do a google search and all that turned up were a few pages (some in foreign languages) describing what sounds like a bog moss native to the British Isles, non-aquatic and definitely not an Asian Liverwort like AM's website claims. I also found a few other aquatic forums where people had ordered it and promptly killed it. I was kinda mad, but my fault for not doing the research first and it was cheap, so not huge deal.

When it arrived, it looked awful but I stuck it in some plastic mesh and tossed it in the tank. Nothing happened for months except for a few scraggly streamers. I got tired of looking at the mesh and tossed it in my QT tank...it completely died off there except for one little green strand that I decided to tie to my driftwood just to see if being closer to the light helped. Apparently this stuff likes wood, light, and high flow (it's right under the output of my AC110). Over the last couple months it has totally taken off to the point I've been able to propagate it under nylon mesh to completly cover the top of my driftwood stump, a nearly baseball sized rock, and I've tossed quite a few random clumps that get stuck to my filter intake.

Rather than the advertised weeping look, I now have a very cool bush of...mystery bushy stuff. When it gets too tall (around 2-3"), it comes out in clumps almost on its own, which I just stuff under more nylon or toss depending on how ambitious I'm feeling. It's more leggy on the rock at the bottom of the tank, not as neat looking at the stuff on the driftwood, but it's been fun playing with it. My setup is the 46 bowfront with the AC110 running directly over it, DIY CO2 when I remember to change it, Flourish when I remember to dose it, and 96 watts of compact fluorescent lighting (6700/10k bulb). Sometimes I think I see it pearling, but that may be the agitation of the HOB...I don't know.

Here are some pics...a couple close-ups to show the detail/size of the leaflets, and another of it on the driftwood with a quarter (washed before and removed after pics) imbedded in the mass to show off its cushy-ness.

Any ideas?

The SAE will probably eat the leaves off all your moss, that's what happen to my flame moss..
Plagiomnium affine looks really cool draping over the rock in that picture.

My SAEs munch in it and my weeping moss all the time, but I never see any damage, or they're growing faster than my SAEs are eating it. I loved it in the pic, I have a rocky cave I thought it would look awesome draped over...but with my research (in OP) and with the way it's growing, I have no idea what I actually got. Pics I've seen of creeping and peacock moss look very similar, so that may be it. Any other takers/verifiers?
