Hello all. I bought some RCS a few weeks back, i didnt notice and i checked to make sure, but one must have been berried because now my tank is full of small shrimp. Im a little worried about there geno because the tank at the LFS had yellow shrimp in the same tank, and if i understand correct, those two will cross breed. I dont want any mutants! But there color seems red, most are clear. Is clear normal for baby shrimp? If they end up being cross breed what should i do with them? Also a question on Dark green shrimp. I bought 5 from msjinx, they were green when i got them, and now they are yellow and red, is this normal? subrate is light. I dont see them very often with all the plants, but when i do see them they are lively and seem happy.

thanks for any helps.

LOL you won't have mutants you'll just have a neocardina shrimp with their wild colorations if that were the case. Normally clear bodies with flecks of color, or browns. From what I understand clear is normal for babies until their get a bit bigger and start to color up.

As for the green shrimp I don't know, I haven't tried any of those out yet. What is their diet? I read sometimes diet can affect coloration, there is even forumlated foods that are supposed to bring out colors in some aquatic animals. If it makes you feel better I got some blue/black shrimp and they seem to change colors on a daily basis, I think it's pretty cool!

Thanks for the response. Their diet is the same thing Msj had them on the hakari waffers. But ive only fed them twice, they have eat ALOT of algae that gathered while the tank cycled, ALOT! they have cleaned the tank better then any other algae eater ive seen. They didnt seem to eat the waffers, i dont think they noticed it. I dropped one in there and seen one on it, but then nothing, so i removed it after a few hours.

They dont seem sick, although they seem to hide alot, i heard thats what sick shrimp do, but like this morning i turned on the light and they were all huddled together and immediately started searching for food, being active. The substrate is a light natural color that i regret, i wish i would have gone black.

I did a water change and there color came back :) its my first water change since i got them a week ago. I'm just paranoid.

oh good! I have been wracking my brain and reading around, lol. glad they are well!

haha thanks! I did loose one, i think, i cant find the 5th, but they are all healthy active now, pretty sure i have at least one female. And the baby shrimps are turning more red, i think they are cherry and not mutants. At least i hope!
