Hi! I bought 5 Nerite snails and they were sent to me on Saturday and arrived today. I've never had snails before so I just placed them in the tank about 6 hours ago and they're still in the same place. Please tell me there's still chance that they are alive? Is there something I could do? I could really use some help here. I would really appreciate it! Thanks!

Did you buy them as FW or SW?

Gee...I really don't know...I bought the from the user: customdrum. My tank is a freshwater tank. Don't know if this helps.

I've never known him to keep SW. He is into FW so your nerites are likely FW. He's a member here as well. Will request a mod to have this thread moved to FW Inverts forum.
What are your water parameters? Temperature? When the snails were transported, was there weather extremity?

Nitrates ~12.5mg/l. Ammonia & Nitrite = 0 ppm. pH = 7.2. Temperature = 82 Farenheit. No extreme temperatures outside the tank.

did you drip acclimate them or just throw them in?

Well I was going to acclimate them but since they did not arrive in a bag I just thought I didn't have to so I just carefully placed the somewhere in the tank where I would know if they moved or not...now I'm worried.

what do you mean they didn't arrive in a bag? what, were they just in an envelope or something?

well no. It was a box with the snails wrapped in wet paper towel. That, wrapped in plastic (like the plastic bags) but not a bag. And that, wrapped in some protective paper of some sort..

erm... you should always DRIP ACCLIMATE anything new you're adding to your tank. much gentler and i've YET to lose anything since i've started drip acclimating.

Ok...so there's nothing I could do now? Just wait and pray? What's the chance of survival? 50%? 25%? Less?

you can try pulling them out, into a bowl with fresh dechlorinated water, letting them sit a while in there /shrug also you can try turniing off whatever light is near them, they might just be stressed
do you know what your water parameters are?
also, if they start to stink, they're dead.

Fresh dechlorinated? Wouldn't that be another abrupt change? And sit...submerged or just dipped? Yeah, I know about the smell.

You did nothing wrong. I tell people to just place them gently rigth side up on the substrate when they are shipped out of water. If they are shipped IN water, drip acclimation is best.
My question is how long did it take for them to get to you? Did the package stay warm? Nerites can commonly take up to one day to really start motoring around. Just monitor them for now and check them after lights out on the tank.

It took 4 days (from saturday to wednesday) to arrive. The lights went out and nothing hapenned. I took them out and placed them in a small bowl with tanks water and this morning I added some destilled water to the bowl to double the amount of water with new water. I'll keep an eye on them. Thanks Rachel.

They told me it could take up to two days. Nobody has anything else to say?

I think the outlook is poor if they have not moved after a day.

OK, truth, thanks, really appreciated. I'll let you know.

When I have some in question, I put them in a breeder trap to be able to access them easier and gauge better if they ahve moved at all.

Breeder trap? Like a net? Should I do it? How do you do this?

i just use the plastic floating boxes (they are like $2 at my LFS) and put them in there. It just makes it easier to reach them and target feed.

Any pic? What do you mean with target feed?

Well, they were dead. They smelled like garbage today. So I lost my snails and my 16 dollars :(

sometimes they wont move for days at a time and there not dead.
i have some that will sit in substrate for 3-4 days then there moving around fine.
1-2 days not moving is not enough time to say there dead.
i pack them in wet paper towel in ziploc or other bag with air.
shipped out around 250 in past month with 4 doas. its not the packing thats the problem and i dont ship out dead or dying snails either, there all around 1/4-1/2 max in size so there great shipping size.
i will replace all doas for shipping cost!

I think the fact that they smelled like garbage is a good indication of them being dead. It happens to the best of us.
