I was just reading about the benefit of using OZONE instead of a UV system and I was wondering if any of you guys use an OZONE generator set up on your tanks? I understand that you would also need a controller but it seems like the benefits would be substantial. Thanks for your input.

I don't but I know they're available for commercial scale rigs, if not for home use. In theory, they're a good idea, probably lower maint. than UV, more efficient...

I know of some hardcore reef people that use ozone generators to inject their skimmers, as it apparently makes a skimmer much more efficient. All the systems I've seen have some sort of capture device to vent any excess gas outside to the atmosphere, as apparently it is potentially harmful if it builds up in your home? Not too sure about that.

The systems I have bin looking at use a controller to monitor and adjust the output of the Ozone generator. From what I have seen you need a "reaction chamber" of some sort to introduce it but I cant seem to find one of those anywhere? From what I understand they work better than UV's but its a lot more money and you need a few more pieces of equipment. I was hopping to find someone who was using one and ask them about a few points? Thanks, Arkangel77

When I worked in a water treatment plant, we would inject ozone into the water for purification. The stuff was amazing, but it is extremely dangerous. We would occasionally have fish sneak through the screens on the river intake, the would make it through the softening basins before we could net them out. They would slide through the ozone chamber and come out as half-a-fishy due to the corrosive properties of ozone.

If the ozone was a bit to high in the chamber it would seep through before it would deteriorate. The filter room would have the ambient ozone. When it was concentration in the air was high enough, you could "wash" your clothes by hanging them up in the room. "Its oxyclean".

Its oxyclean Ya I bett! I have decided to table this idea. I never found the info I was looking for - however Dr. Fosters&Smith tech line told me that it would not work at with lower PH lvl's below 7.5? I only have there word on that so who knows. When I say work I mean the braking down of wast affect that Ozone has. Arkangel77

We kept our effluent water at a pH of 7.2 basically because of the ozone. The higher the pH the more ozone it needed to clean the water. There were other things that would affect the dosage like temperature and TOC (total organic carbons). Basically the worse the water quality, the more ozone you needed.

You can use for your health to, but its illegal. They smell like rain, and will cost you about 1,000. We have one, but not for fish....

very unstable atom and is very dangerous without the proper care and equipment

They smell like rain.

One of the main reasons ozone smells like rain, is because ozone is formed in thunderstorms when the lightning splits apart the O2 molecules and forms the O3 molecules of ozone. So what you are smelling is actually the ozone in the air. Personally, I thought it smelled like my grandmother's basement...

Keep us posted if you decide to be the guinea pig on this! I am really interested in your experience as I would like to add one to my tank.

I know a way to make an easy ozone generator... basically it's made when there's lightning... you'll need a few pieces of metal mesh and something conductive but not too conductive... which is hard to get sometimes, cardboard will work but it might catch on fire... those presentation boards will work but they'll give off poisonous fumes... the best material is ultra thin ceramic with pieces of sand or something like that... you will also need a high voltage power source, the stuff that comes from your outlet is not enough, you will need something much, much higher.. about 1000 volts will do well... you basically glue the mesh on both sides of whatever material you are using making sure they're not too big to spark across the side... you apply the leads of the high voltage source on both sides and use it accordingly... very, very dangerous if you have flammable fumes or anything explosive around...

you can also use the leads a distance away from eachother, but that isn't too efficient and you'll waste alot of the power from the trasnsformer

I got mine for about 150$ off ebay, still works wonders with our air

They are not that expensive-lol. I would just buy one. To tell ya the truth - I gave up. I cant find all the equipment (Reaction chamber) or good info on how to set it up/or if it will even work. Its too much money to guess? I think it would work but I am told not to bother? Who knows.

It rains in your grandmother's basement? I sure hope not, but it has a ozone-ish smell to it. It is a strange phenomenon.

old post, but i thought id bring it back up as i was seeing if anyone has updates on ozone generators on freshwater tanks. i personally am on the fence on either UV or ozone....

so far ozone might be better in the long run as you dont have to buy new bulbs and such. both kill bad bacteria. dont know about parasites.

I haven't forgot about this I just haven't had time to deal with it - other fish to fry (pardon the PUN).

I use ozone on discus tanks. It helps me by eliminating frequent water changes. The longest I've gone without a water change on a discus thank is 12 days. Check out this thread:
