I've been reading a lot here and have become fascinated by shrimp. When the weather warms I'll have an empty filtered, cycled and heated 5 gal tank. Would that be a good size for some shrimp? What would be an ideal decor for them? I could easily change it into a planted tank if that's what they'd do best in. And... could anyone suggested a good site for me to do some more reading about them on?
Thanks!

That would be fine for shrimp, I prefer larger tanks just because so many of the species reproduce so readily. What type of shrimp are you interested in keeping? There are volumes of threads right here on AC. They do like plants, but they are not necessary. They also do best in an established tank with biofilms.
The title asks for snails and the post asks for shrimps.

I just came back to the forum and noticed what I had done with the title and the thread. I am soooo very sorry!!!! Not a blonde moment, a 'cats are shedding already and my allergies are kicking in moment'. Great first impression for me to make in this forum.....
I am interested more in shrimp - I don't have a favorite yet - but, to be honest after reading about how much people enjoy their snails I may lean more toward them. I haven't seen shrimp available locally, but, a few stores have snails available. If I get a population explosion I have several other tanks I could move them into. I know my Clown Loaches would enjoy them as a snack, so, that tank is out, but, a couple of my other tanks would probably be OK.
I sure am enjoying reading on this site - people here have a lot of knowledge to share in a friendly way!

shrimp its best to order them from off the internet. there are so many cool shrimp out there. if you want to do snails prob go with a apple snail or two in the 5 gallon and leave it at that.

5 Gallons are under appreciated. You can do as much with them as you can a larger tank. You just have to do it on a smaller scale. I kept both shrimp and snails in my 5. Decor was a very small candle holder turned upside down and the shrimp used it to play "King of the Mountain" on. It had holes in the sides for entry and exits. A big clump of java moss was the only plant in it.
I have a 6g with just assassin snails only and their prey.:headbang2:

I have a 5 gallon with some ramshorn snails and I plan on adding some shrimp in the future. It's a fun little set up :)
