Hi,

Does anybody have a suggestion for eliminating a serious green algae bloom? I am having trouble in a tank with a male and female Convict Ciclids with a new batch of about 20-25 fry. I want to use something safe so as not to harm the fry (approx 10 days old). I've used freshwater mussels before to filter the water, with great success, however, they can be very hard to find .

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I assume you're referring to green water. It is due to an excess of phosphates and other nutrients. Frequent water changes (with a good gravel vaccuming) will help eliminate/prevent it.
Also, does the tank get a lot of direct sunlight? if so, thats a big reason why.

Daphnia are also great at eating up the free floating particles.

I would stay away from using any chemicals that say they will rid you of green water. Not only can they be potentially bad for your fry, but it covers the problem up - rather than fixing it.

Look for a fish food low in phosphates if possible, be certain not to overfeed (usually the main cause in gw bouts), and do a lot of small, frequent water changes, being sure to get all the gunk out of the gravel.:)
