hello everyone.. id really like to get some oto's or some cories for my 10 gallon tank but I dont know if its suitable for them since there is no algae growing on the walls and what not..
i know the oto's feed of algae.. and cories are bottom dwellers..
my tank is fairly new, its been up for a little less than a month.. but its already cycled. My plants are currently being shipped so those will be going in soon.
any advice on which species of cat to get? and how many of whichever one is suitable for my tank?
there will be other top swimmers added later as well, so keep that in mind.
thanks :)

i would go with some dwarf corydoras or a few medium corys. i would suggust against otos esp. for a biggener.

you should start with your swimmers and get the cats once there's algae for them.

Otos are algae eaters, cories do not need algae nor will they eat it. They are bottom feeders needing a varied diet of veggie based foods as well as flakes, pellets, frozen/live foods. They will scavenge through plants and around decorations looking for bits of food but will not eat algae.

I would recommend pygmy cories (specifically habrosus) but not until your tank is aged a little more and really stable.

Hi Tigerbarb,
Oto's need heaps and heaps of algae and need to be in a well established tank which has been set up for at least a few months, from my experience.
They need to be fed every two days, with cucumber and zucchini, once all the algae has been eaten.
Also need the algae wafers, and their little tummies should be chubby.
If they are skinny, they don't survive and may be gradually starving to death.
There are some web sites about oto's on the net.
They can be a bit tricky to keep, but I still have 3 of the four oto's I bought on 29th of January this year. One died accidently, by getting stuck in some of the wood in my tank.
If the vegies are not removed after two days, they go bad and may make the fish sick.
All the best,
NeonGems :)

a tiger shovel nose....
jk jk! pygmy cories would be awesome for a 10 gal!
Only one cat per 10G...I recommend a small short-hair; a Maine Coon can be a tight fit and the long hair will clog your filter...
<groan> Sorry...Could...Not...Resist
Seriously...small corys would be great...6 pygmys if you can find 'em...or 3-4 panda corys...3 C.aeneus would be a bit tight but probably OK...I've had 12 in a 40 with no issues.

I would say for color and size 3-4 pandas ro 4-6 habrosous. The pygmaseus and Hastas seem a little boring color wise although fine choic also 4-6.
