View Full Version : Texas holey rock: Update

I've had a few things hold me up since I posted all the pics of the rocks.

First I was down in the back (and most of the other body parts) for about a week after, lol. Oh, to be twenty again.:headshake2:

Then, I had a some kind of bug that's been going around at work, and that kept me out of commission for about a week. Yuck.:barf:

This week, though, I sent msjinkzd a rock, and luckydud13 a flat rate box of mostly smooth chunks with no holes and a couple of knobby ones for him to start constructing this pile of rocks that he wants to slope down from one corner. He has african cichlids coming in about a week so I hurried up and sent him some to get him started.

When I go get more rocks he wants another box to complete his structure.

On all the others, I had been holding off sending because I was hoping to get them sandblasted.

I had looked at people that sell this stuff online and they all sandblast theirs and they look so pretty and bright white. Mine are varying shades of white and cream and tan colored, and some of the rocks have this reddish residue of mudrock on them that comes off with sanding.

Some of them have a heavier layer of the mudrock residue that needs to be blasted off. I tried using sandpaper on some of that and it won't budge. I tried a stiff plastic brush that had no effect and then a stainless steel brush, but it left a grey discoloration so I nearly freaked out when I saw that :nilly:and I worked with sandpaper to remove the discoloration.

Also, the stuff is soft enough that you have to be careful not to put little scratches in it, so I used a really fine grit to smooth out the steel brush marks and scratches from the coarser sanding that I had done, lol.

So, I thought I'd check around here to see if I could find a business that does sandblasting.

I found a couple of places in the area that do media blasting so I checked on pricing. One place said $75 an hour, and another one said $150. They use glass beads and even soda. The guy with the soda blaster said he uses so much pressure he didn't know if it would be gentle enough for the rocks. He's going to do a test rock for free when his work load slows down... sigh.:headshake2:

A friend of ours was over one day and I was explaining the reasons for all the rocks spread out all over my dining table, lol, and how I wanted to do sandblasting and he said he had just seen a used blasting chamber that was for the hobbiest for $75 at a pawn shop.

Well.... I got excited about that and have been calling and searching for that ever since. He said he couldn't remember which shop because he goes to all of them at least once a week to see if there is anything new that he might want.

The hobbiest chamber would work well, I think, because this rock is fairly soft and I believe it wouldn't take but a few minutes to make each one look like I want.

I can't find one at a dang pawn shop now, and they want around $300 for a new one at Grainger, and that doesn't include the compressor I'd need.

If I eventually start to seriously try to sell some of this stuff I might make the investment.

An interesting sidenote: one of the guys I spoke to, during my search, and showed the rock to said he had that kind of rock all over the ground on his property out southwest of here not too far away, I think. I'm going to ask him if I can go pick up rocks on his property, too.
:woot::woot:

Most people here don't give a flip about those rocks and think you'd be doing them a favor if you pick them up. Problem is finding out who has the land and getting permission.

I may have hit another jackpot with this guy. If I were to find that it is a good easy source I may start a website and sell the stuff. If I did I'd make an arrangement with the guy to give him a percentage if he wants that. He may just be happy for me to haul them off.:evil_lol:

Yesterday I got some boxes, though, so I could go ahead and start sending out the rocks to the ones that have requested some of this batch.

I've kind of given up on the sandblasting for now so I'm going to go ahead and start sending these out over the next few days.

Sorry it's taken so long. I was just hoping I could do a little blasting. I wanted to make them really extra pretty.:)

Some of you folks will get yours in a flat rate box and some might need to be sent UPS in a bigger box. I'll let you all know about shipping cost.

There's a Pack 'N Mail store really close to me that I use and I'll run over there and get the shipping information today, and then pm individuals who have requested specific rocks.

It won't be long now and you'll have your THR.:headbang2:I will want to see lots of pics of tanks with THR.

Msjinkzd is going to bribe her snails and shrimp with some extra sweet snail jello to get them to strike a pose on the rock I sent her. I can't wait, lol.

Melody, do not worry about cleaning any coming to me. My hubby has a sandblaster doo dad (technical term). He has blasted paint off of iron benches and stuff for me so he can do rocks as well. Just let me know how much to give you for shipping.

OMG! I wish I had a sandblaster!!

It will be great, then, to have him blast some of the mudrock off of yours. I have some beauties that I'm sending you, that have some of that on the bottom and backside, that I think will really open up more with some careful blasting.

I would love to see the affect if you don't mind taking pics of before and after. That would be great. Also, if you could get him to give you the technical info such as medium and psi that he used. That will help me know what I need to buy when I'm ready to do that. He will need to be careful if he uses sand and really high psi.

I will make sure to take pics and have him give us all the techy details of what he is doing.

lol ok first take the rocks off your table lol finding a closer place is your best bet. what i would do is make 2 piles of rock in your backyard.... hope you have one lol. one stuff ready to go and sell others that need to be sand blasted. start selling some of the ready to go rock. save up the money you get from selling the rock and buy the sand blaster stuff. you might also want to look up fraight though ups for some of the bigger ones. dont forget to save money for countless ice packs for your back so when your done playing with your rock you can at least relaxy your mussles lol

Let me be the first to say that Melody's boxwork is like a giant puzzle. Nearly every square inch was covered in THR.

This is really nice stuff. Melody is a great person and I highly recommend her to any one thinking about buying these rocks.

I included some pics below of the stuff. (FIY I asked her to send me crap stuff to start my "pile" her other stuff is mucho awsome. She has amazing stuff.

FIY melody, I will probably only need a small rate box next time. Because of your awesome package, it really filled up my tank better than I thought. I'm going to need some space for my shell dwellers.

Thanks for the praise luckydud13. It does make a nice big pile. I know I crammed as many as I possibly could in that flat rate box.

I guess the limestone will make the chemistry of your tank just right for your African Cichlids, but when I go back for more rocks I will be sure to reserve a few really nice holey ones for your fishies to swim in and out of.

Oh, and you're very welcome. I'm glad you like them.

LOL, I do have a backyard and, in fact, I have a plywood platform I made for the two massive rocks I still have. I also have a table on the patio that has some rocks on it that I'll be shipping out this week. (Ice packs and "Icey Hot" on the shopping list)

I did have a lot of rocks on my dining table that day, trying to choose good ones for Luckdud13 that would make a good pile and yet fit in a flatrate box.

I know my husband rolled his eyes every time he came through the room, lol.

I kept stacking and unstacking, arranging and rearranging rocks, making piles, trying to make nooks and crannys, hollows and ledges... letting my mind become one with the mind of the "tanganikan cichlids. Some julies (one pair) and some multies" that luckydud13 told me he is going to have in his tank.

(I guess you can tell I've been having fun with these rocks)

I finally decided on the ones to send. All I had left, that weren't already spoken for from this first trip to Austin, were a bunch of limestone chunks and a couple of gnarly knobby ones, but I'm already planning my next trip.:)

I already have a sandblaster on the radar, and I'm working on convincing my husband how handy it would be to have an air compressor. Power wash the car, power wash the bricks on the house, oh, and when we need to repaint the wood trim on the house...........:evil_lol:

Ohhhhhh.... that looks nice, Jacki!! I hope your shrimp like the holes and tunnels in that rock.

When you get your shrimp in there, I want you to bribe them with some tasty treats to "strike a pose" on that rock so you can take another awesome photo.

You could ask your skippers to give them some tips on being photogenic.:grinyes:

Hi, docsoldlady.... I have your rocks on my patio waiting for me to put it in a box. You and b.greene and petluvr and jpappy and.... let me see... I have a list here somewhere, lol, I won't forget anyone.

I seriously do have some to send out. I thought my niece would have started digging her swimming pool by now and I'd have more to choose from, but I'm going to have to go ahead and send what I've got left.

Luckydud, I don't have any other cool rocks except for the ones I've promised to go out, but I do think I'll have more within the next few weeks.

Have you tried cleaning these rocks with a pressure washer. It would be a lot cheaper. You can adjust the pressure and patern as you work. No need to buy a seperate compressor or any special medium. It is easy to find someone who has one to test it out. The best part is that it can be use for countless other things and is therefore more practical . I used a neighbours to clean the bark off some wood for an aquarium, last week. Yet that machine would be stong enought to tear it apart if I wanted it to.
Limestone can also be bleached to snow white (or it's original colour) using bleach or a medium acid solution (I've used both) followed by a freshwater soaking.
I love to collect rocks. My problem is settling on the few to put in the tank because they all are unique and awesome.

I too like the "Holly" ones. The holes add charater and another dimention.

Have a good day.
