I have a planted 46g with a few cories, etc. I have long debated about having a few discus as the other inhabitants, but have received mixed information about the possibility of keeping them in this size of tank.

I have currently been looking at 2-3 small (1.5-2.5") discus that I feel should "fit," although I wouldn't want to add them if they won't be happy and thrive. I have cannister filtration that is overkill for the tank, and the water quality is good. However, I probably won't have time to do water changes more than once or twice a week. If that's truly required, discus probably aren't for me. I'd rather not have them than get them and not be able to take proper care of them. I could use RO water if that would help.

Also, if I do get them, and they do get too large and need a bigger tank, I haven't ruled out getting another larger (55 or 72g) tank in a year or so. How fast do the discus grow? If they are going to be 8" in 6 months or so, then that's probably a bad idea. But if it takes a couple years, I could probably upgrade them to a larger tank.

THanks for any info!

a few things you should know about discus.
they prefer groups.. 4 is the minimum number but often the recommended school is 5-6 as a minimum.
they will act more social when the numbers get over 6.
they need warm water...especially young Discus. they also benefit with several small feedings per day...this equates to more water changes.. usually small daily water changes with large water changes mix in. the young Discus thrive in clean water.
usually recommended to raise young discus in a bare bottom tank for this reason.
that said you can keep discus in a planted tank but best if they are adult sized. the adults can get by with 2 water changes weekly.
