View Full Version : Dainos intimidating my shrimp

I have a small peacefull community in my 20g freshwater planted, consisting of 5 white clouds and 6 amano shrimp.

About 2 or 3 weeks ago, I added a pleco, which seemed to have caused my plants some major damage, thus I got rid of it (see my thread in the Aquatic plants forum). So I traded the pleco in and picked up 6 zebra dainos instead. Supposedly they would harm neither my plants nor my amanos.

HOWEVER, since adding the frisky dainos to my tank, my shrimp no longer walk about as they used to (which was entertaining as hell, I love seeing them roam about the tank). Instead, they cling to my sponge prefilter for my XP-1 filter, seeming to hide from the dainos, which zip around the tank, particularly the bottom, where the shrimp used to roam. I will probably get rid of the dainos this week, because really, the shrimp are the real draw of my tank, they are my pride and joy.

I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts or ideas, or even any common experiences. Any help is welcome.

Thanks as always!

Most likely, the danios are a bit of a shock to the amanos, and that's why they are hiding. The shrimp should soon figure out that the danios are not a threat, and go back to their normal behavior. Give it another week or so before removing the danios.

Don't get rid of the Danios yet! I have four zebra danios in my 10g tank with four ghost shrimp.

Their activity was similar at first. The shrimp were totally freaked by the danios. It took a couple of weeks but the shrimp are now used to the spastic danios and roam freely. Give it a little time.

I have had a similar experience with long fin leopard danios and a ghost shrimp.

ok ok, I'll try and be patient, just a bit longer...Its just hard seeing my favorite little creatures sulk in the corner, so to speak. But I can't argue with oRiongirl (:P), now can i?

But the dainos do need a chill pill...

If you don't already have some, you should provide some hiding spots for the shrimp. It will help now so they can hide from the danios and feel safe. Later they'll use it to hide while they are shedding their shells.
