Hello everyone! It has been a while since I last posted. I have 5 discus that I purchased from Kenny September of last year and they have been doing great. I have em now in a 55 gal planted tank. The past few days I been 3 of them doing a tail shiver which progressed to a full body shimmy. From what I have read this meant they were getting ready to spawn. And surprise I woke up this morning and my Blue Diamond has laid eggs on the suction pipe of my Fluval 305! I'm sooo happy and excited! Problem is I'm not sure which is the father coz he's hanging out with the Blue Cobalt. My suspicion is the Pigeon Blood but its on the other side of the tank with the Cobalt.

NOW WHAT DO I DO? I have an empty BB 29 gal tank. Looks like I have to get that ready. Now for the questions:
How will I know that the eggs are fertile?
How long before the eggs hatch?
When should the parents be transffered to the empty tank?
How in the world am I going to transfer the eggs?
Is there any specific tank params I have to follow in terms of water chemistry and temp?
:help2:

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Hey Marl...Congrats! This is definitely an exciting part of keeping discus! Rarely are discus parents successful on the first few spawns. it's a learning curve. While the females seem to reach maturity faster, the males need a bit more time to catch up. I would suggest you get the 29G ready to move the pair over, barebottom with a sponge filter and a spawning cone of some sort in readiness to move the pair into that tank and start from there. First, you have to figure out which two are the actual pair. Spawning in the young discus couples will occur about every 10 days for the next several months as long as they stay conditioned...so there's lots of opportunities for success in the future. For now, see which two are taking care of the eggs (fanning), ususally the male and female alternate turns.

If memory serves me correctly, it will be 3 days before they hatch. Any eggs that aren't fertile will go white and the discus parents will eventually remove them from the spawn site. So by this time you'll know who the pair is and if it in fact was a fertile attempt. Young discus are famous for eating the wrigglers so if you get some, don't be surprised, again .... part of the learning curve. In the meantime while you watch what happens with this spawn, you get a chance to order some food for the baby discus and can get ready for growing them out.

Keep the water parameters the same in the 29G as in the original tank.

Well been keeping an eye on the BD most of the day. She was watching the eggs the whole time. 3 or 4 of them turned white. And when the lights came on at 10pm she started eating them! .

BUMMER! Now there are no more eggs.... *sigh oh well. I'm sure they will spawn again and maybe get it right this time around.

Like Debbi said it's a learning curve. Was real exciting though while it lasted.

So surprise surprise! I wake up this morning and my Blue Cobalt and Pigeon Blood have paired off and laid eggs on the other side of the tank on one of my Amazon Sword leafs.

Well this time both of them are watching the eggs and are fanning it with their fins. Also some of the eggs have turned white which means they must be the unfertilized ones. We'll see what happens to this spawn.

In the meanwhile I will be getting my 29 gal ready. And start taking tests on my water.

My video on Breeding Angels may help, as there is some similarities between the two species. Good luck!
