planning a trip and need some ideas for a day trip in western NY/PA

We are driving from Chicago to Salem, Mass. to visit some friends. On the way there we are planning going thru Canada to Niagara to stop for the night.

But on the way back we would just follow I-90 from Buffalo back to Chicago. We will probably stay overnight somewhere between Buffalo and Eire. So is there anything we can do in that area that isn't a tourist trap, get us out of the car for a few hours, and won't add a lot more driving time to our return ride home.

Is the Maritime Museum in Erie worth the time?

They will actually only be about 30 minutes away from me. I don't know about the maritime museum in Erie though. You could come down here for drinks and to see the ducks walk on the fish!
