I have an Olympus SP-500UZ, have had it for a few years... maybe 3 or 4. I bought it brand new and have never had an issue with it.... until now. It has never been dropped and is usually in a carrying case except when being used. I went to a show last night, took tons of pics, get to the PC this morning to upload everything and something is wrong. When I plug in the USB cord, the pop up comes on the camera asking what I want to do, as usual... and when I select PC, the screen goes blank.... I tried to go in manually from the PC but the program is telling me the camera cannot be found. I tried plugging it into a different port, same issue. I tried doing it to the laptop instead, same problem.... so I know it is a camera issue. Any ideas?

I owned a Olympus D-395 It worked fine for a while then started killing batteries in matter of hours and would do similar things when trying to transfer pics to my computer. I fixed it by giving it to my daughter for a toy and buying a new camera.

hahaha! that is great, 13.... problem is though, I don't have a daughter...

the new message I am getting is "the device is not ready".... I am now going to try uninstalling the softward and reinstalling it...

ok please do not be insulted:
1. turn on camera, then plug in the usb
then do a refresh (F5) when u are in mycomputer see if it pops up then

also make sure u alwasy use the same usb port..windows is rather weird operating system....for every usb port that u plug in your camera or printer...it will "download the driver" and "install" to that port...so to save time energy and frustration try to use the same usb port.

also try:
replace batteries. then plug in usb to camera, then plug into computer when computer is on..then go to my computer and do a F5 refresh and see if it is there.

make sure the usb cord has not gone bad...this happens frequently...alot more frequently than people think; before replacing the camera i would replace the usb cord or go to a computer store and ask them to see if the camera works and if u need a usb cord

I had the same thing happen, DD. Turned out to be the USB cord. I bought a new one and everything worked perfect.

no offense taken, I think I would suggest the same thing.... but yeah, I have the cord plugged into the same port at all times and when I am ready, I usually just plug into the camera and usually, it calls it right up. That's why I am confuddled for why it's not working now.

ok, just replaced the batteries with new ones, tried the usb plugging in and into the computer, same port as always.... went to my computer, not even showing it's plugged in, even after hitting F5 so I went to the program in program files to force it up and it says "the device not ready".

I was thinking it could be the cord, it would be an easier fix for sure. It beats going out for a new camera... off to ebay....:headshake2:

oh excellent, Kash... eases my mind a lot... so then the worst off of it, is the pics will not be posted as timely as I like them to be but at least they will get there. Thanks for the suggestions and help, guys.

I'm gonna place a bet on the USB connection being bad in the camera. I have seen this countless times and there is not much you can do but get a card reader as suggested.

Basically what happens is the port connectors get worn out and the port stops working. A card reader is the only way to go and usually works faster and quicker than downloading from the camera anyway. Plus you are not having to have the camera powered on while downloading which adds more wear and tear on the electronic.
