I bought a new glass top for my 46 gallon bow front and I guess it must be for a slightly different tank because its about an 1/8 of an inch too long. What I was wondering is if I can shave off the extra using a hand held grinder. Any ideas?

I have used a belt sander to "trim" glass.
I have a Topfin 46 gallon BF and the back partof the top is rectangle shaped
(hinge on back).
You could either cut some glass shorter or get a glass company to do it.
I wanted to cover a larger portion so I cut a bigger piece.
I wouldn't use a grinder though. A ginder is apt to shatter the glass.
Glass shards fly like mad, so be sure to wear safety goggles if you sand.
My BF is not 1/4" glass on top. It is 2/16" thick. I tried the 1/4" and couldn't get it to fit in the plastick hinge.

I would just take it to a hardware store or glass shop and have them cut it. You might even be able to get your local 'big box store' to do it. This would be much easier then trying to grind it, which is both tedious and somewhat dangerous.

yeah id definatly take it to a store and have them trim it off. its easier and less time consuming. i dont think it costs much.

Trouble is, in order to trim it, there will have to be a piece large enough to trim.
When you cut glass, you can't just cut a small slice of it. I'd say it has to be at least 1/2" or more wide.

This is exactly why I'm asking. So little needs to come off.

So far the belt sander is the best cost effective suggestion.

Thanks Charles

And wear lots of personal protective gear--those glass shards will imbed themselves into exposed flesh really easily.
