*721 Scam

I live in Texas, but after some research found that this is a nationwide scam. I wanted to warn my fellow AC members about it.

Yesterday I got a call from the Harris County Jail by a man posing as a deputy. He told me one of my kids was in jail and that I needed to call a Sgt. Garcia at another number which he provided. When I called the number, part of which contained the sequence *721, it forwarded my telephone number to the pay phone at the jail, allowing the inmate to make collect calls and charge them to my number. I'm getting this mess sorted out currently but wanted y'all to be on guard against this scam. Sheesh, what a PITA!

Coming from someone who spent 4 years in jail and prison I don't see how that is possible with how the systems are set up but sorry to hear this.
