So I broke down and got rid of using my Coralife super skimmer 220. I finally went and bought a quality skimmer in comparison.

Now I have one question (since there was no directions).....

How the heck do I tune it? It has some bubble plate and I have it to where water flows above the bubble plate and creates the seal between the plate and the funnel to the collection cup...

How do I know where to adjust it? Does the water line above the plate have to sit in a particular spot?

So far I think its working...i barely have any skimmate (its been up since Saturday night)...

Here is what it looks like: http://www.aquacave.com/octopus-nw-150-needle-br-wheel-protein-skimmer-749.html

I believe with those, the part that holds that sponge filter thing, is a telescoping pipe. You raise and lower that to adjust the bubble level inside the skimmer neck. Your adjustment level will depend on how wet or dry you want to skim...i would probably try it with the bubble level right about at that lower black plate and adjust accordingly from there.

It took me a min to figure it out... if you look at the bubble plate and funnel they dont seal to eachother... the actual clear tube going to the collection cup rests around the bubble plate hole.

For min i was reseting it and dumping the water off the plate...then I noticed hmm its supposed to do it I think...so i let it overflow to fill it up to the bottom of the clear funnel ...to create a seal .... i also noticed a hole at the top so it doesnt overflow into the cup (nice ) I figured that out later.

I have it set to where i see the foam right past the lip of the plate opening...so far 8th inch of skim since saturday night this morning.

I expected more...but I guess I need to let it break in ...thanks sploke you confirmed my thoughts on where to set it ...

I was just wondering if that water line above the plate has to be set at a certain level or not.

Are you referring to the bubble diffusion plate? Not entirely sure which parts of the skimmer you are referring to.

I have a picture of what im talking about Amp. The part where the bubble black plate thing sits in...from the top of that to the bottom of the clear tube from my collection cup is a water. If I have the bubbles to low this eventually drains and the skimmate spills over ontop of that black plate..I have to adjust my water level to where there is water above that plate sealing the path to the collection cup not allowing skimmate to flow ontop of that blackplate... so basically water will flow ontop of it and slowly leak back down the edges (no seal on plate just snug fit)....the skim bubbles will flow up the path of least resistance ..to the cup itself....i figure this is a overflow design...if you have some issue where water shoots up...itll spill over onto the black plate section ...outside the tube leading to the cup...

and if too much gets in there on the outside top edge of the reaction chamber where the CUP sits on...is a hole...to let the water out vs shoot your collection cup off like a rocket. If you look closely you will see a hole where the cup meets skimmer main chamber above my PINK ARROW TIP.

anywa...

Does that water line ontop of that plate have to sit at the base of my collection cup tube or do i need to raise it higher... is it used to gauge where your actual bubble line is? My guess is yes...but who knows...

The way I've seen these working is that the water level is almost always partially filling that middle chamber. In most cases, the level has to be that high for skimmate to actually form properly and be pushed into the cup. Use the inside of the riser tube of the cup to view your air/water line (i.e. the spot where the bubbles are no longer in water, but rising distinctly upward).
