well today i went out and got a setup for fowlr to later become a reef possibly
i had crazy ideas this morning about a dsb in a ten but luckily i got talked out of it, so im just running a 5.5 gal with aquaclear 30 good amount of lr and caribean live sand? the tank is super cloudy right now so pretty much nothing to take pics of but it was eventful.
i have a hydrometer soaking right now and probably going to get a heater later on

in the marine world small tanks are the most difficult to maintain....its due to how easy such little water volume can be thrown off by minor changes.

Also 5.5 is too small for a reef.... sure you can have some soft corals...but you are so very limited on space.... too tough in my opinion. Doesn't mean you can't pull it off but as a newbie it may be lots of mistakes till you get it right.

And mistakes = loss of $$$

Consider a much larger tank if you want to do corals later...dont need to rush. Just there are lots of things to consider before going reef tank.

Welcome to the sw side of the hobby!

If you're diligent, I think you can make your little 5.5g reef successful. But, it will definitely be work -- there's plenty to keep up with in general, and those things are magnified in smaller tanks. Because you're keeping such a small tank where one day's worth of evaporation can drastically change the specific gravity of your tank, I would highly suggest investing in a refractometer. They are far more reliable than the average hydrometer and very easy to calibrate when needed. They are also much easier to use, IMO.

Good luck and keep us posted!
