Hey guys,

When I bought my first live rock a while back I had a tiny longspine urchin as a hitch-hiker I mean he was the size of a ballpoint, since then he has grown rapidly to the size of around an inch and a quarter, I noticed a spot of film and hair algae on the back glass before I turned the lights out.The next morning at lights on he had cut a large circle out of the algae, and the glass was crystal clear! He had obviously out competed any snail I've ever had, So for those of you with algae an urchin might be something to look into.:)

Or not, urchins will quickly eat up all your Coralline algae as well, not something most people want after spending a long time getting that nice purple to grow. ;)

Really? I had an urchin for a couple of years and my coralline algae was thick in my tank. I dont think the urchin touched my cor algae at all.
It was a spectacular scavenger in my tank.

I just started my second tank and urchin was first on my list for scavenger crew. I will have to watch how this urchin feeds, and if it is having an effect on coralline algae.

cheers
