Are ghost shrimps' behaviors affected by any medications/drugs such as motrin, caffeine, etc.?
What about sugar/salt?

And the reason for this info is?

I would assume sugar would pollute the water and could kill the shrimp. I've dosed w/pretty heavy doses of salt in the past and had no ill effect on the ghost shrimp but it wasn't overnight it was built up slowly. I guess w/medications you have to look at the chemical compositions and see if it's toxic to the shrimp...I can't help you there. I've seen penicillin and such used to treat fish and dogs etc so I assume certain medications might not have bad effects, sure some would.

be sure to take a look at a merk index to see what the LD50 is on each drug

Well I was thinking more on the terms of something possibly causing hyper activity for the shrimp or something else which I can visibly see. And yeah if I do choose to do this then I would need to use very small concentrations.

Or for another idea, could I just have different types of substrate within a tank and see what the shrimp prefers? Would that have an affect or will the shrimp not notice the difference between substrates?

Would this just be a "fun" personal experiment or something carefully controlled for a purpose?

Depends on the substrate. Shrimp do act differently on sand verus mud verus gravel. I have all 3 types in different tanks and the shrimp in the mud spend a lot more time on the bottom. On the sand they seem so spend about equal time between the plants and substrate and in the gravel they spend more time on the plants and wood. I would assume this is based on food content of the differnet substrates.

Carefully controlled this is for school. We had to pick an invertebrate and ghost shrimps popped in my mind.

well definitely know what the lab produced lethal dosages are good to calibrate your tests which is why the Merk Index is a good book to look into. If you don't have one available at your school, ask me. I have one
