math question . . .

Can anyone help me with the proper formula to figure this out?

Say I have an area of 1150 sq'

and my tiles are 16" X 8", how would I figure out how many tiles I'd need to cover the are?

My brain's in the fritz. If anyone can help me out with this, it'd be appreciated!

16" x 8" tiles cover 128 Sq inches each.
there are 144 sq inches in 1 sq foot so each tile is .888 SF

Then divide your room size, 1150 SF by the coverage of 1 tile .88 and you get 1306 tiles.

I would usually get extras for miscuts and centering purposes, they usually suggest 10% more tile than you need.

you could also factor in the grout lines of about 5/16" -3/8" of an inch too, but most modern tiles have spacers cast into them.

I completely agree with this. But I would say this: I would buy extra to keep for a later purpose. Say if you need to extend where the tile goes or you break some in the future. It will be very hard to match the tile later if the need should arise. Also the modern way to lay tile now is with no grout lines, a very clean look.

really? I didn't know that was the new trend. Good to know...


Thanks again guys.. I keep getting confused with the conversions, when dealing with area, volume, etc.
