what types of plants should i place in a 50 gallon tank with an electric yellow.

They will eat and uproot most plants. You can try java fern or anubias I have heard of people having success with these. I tried java fern in my mbuna tank but they just ate it.

Like blue said, you can try Java Fern, Anubias. You can also use Crinium.

I have a lot of this stuff (Java) in my african tank (pics in sig) and they don't really go near it at all. You want to fasten it quite well to some rock work, or jam it tightly in crevices and it will have a decent chance of growing in.
