Is it a good idea to place you aquascaping rock right against the back glass? And, should the sand go in first or does it matter?

Thanks. I was thinking the same thing and critters won't dig under and topple over. But, is it a good idea to place the rock against the back glass? Seems like it would make it harder to clean. Would make it harder for fish to get back there and hide all the time.

BoCoMo, I guess the back glass isn't a real issue since it grows coralline on it anyway. The place where my tank will be locate, only 2 sides will actually be for good viewing.

Ideally, rocks shouldn't touch the glass, though sometimes, that isn't always feasible in order to create a 'scape. Also create a structure that is as open as possible. If you are planning on keeping corals that grow significantly, then make a lower structure. You'll also want to place the rock down first, and add sand afterward to improve the stability of the structure. Last but not least, use the rule of thirds (or a rough golden mean) to create a structure that is pleasing to the eye. So in other words, make a structure that occupies some multiple of a third. That could be one third from the side, full tank, split a third of the length of the tank, etc. Tons of possibilities. In most cases, slightly less rock is necessary.

Also, I figure if there is some room behind the rock it does allow for more swimming room for fish. I guess it's time to start cutting egg crate and deciding my rock work. I need to flush the sand as well. Aragonite the size of sugar can't be sifted, the screen is too big. Any good ideas?

Amph, I guess I could put 3/4" or 1" PVC under the egg create, but I don't know that I'll need to. I plan on about a 2" sand bed.
