Hi all,
new to fish keeping and in my 5th day of fishless cycling but coming up with a visual problem.
I have started the tank with nothing in except internal filter, heater and sand as base.
When I poured the water into the tank it was crysta clear.
1st day I did the ph test and got a figure of 6.4 and I also put in some fish food.
the next day, the water was still crystal clear and most of the fishfood was gone.
i did the test ph 6-8 and more fish food
the next day (day 3) the water of the tank looked 'dirty' misty but assumed that it was the filter clearing the fishfood.
ph 7
no ammonia
20/04/2009 (day 4)
I have now started to use household ammonia so brought the ammonia level to 4, nitrite 0 but stll the water has not cleared??!

21/04/2009
no ammonia added as the level has not dropped and water is still the same colour.

I am going to do another test tonight to see if the ammonia has dropped (which I think it should) and see if there are any nitrite as people are telling me that the cloudy is the cycle working but I thought it would have been like mist cloudy, not dirty, like mucky pond water also is it not too early for the cloudiness to show??
please help me as I am debating whether to start the whole cycle again and not waste my time if this is wrong.
Regards
Karlo

Welcome to AC! Do you have any driftwood or anythign in your tank? White and cloudy is likely the start of a bacterial bloom (which is good). What color cloudy is it? You can also start a thread in freshwater Newbie where you will get more attention. Good luck with the new tank and hope you enjoy the community!

hi and thank you.
I do not have anything in the fishtank like bogwood etc only the equipment and sand.
The colour is like light brown.
If that helps.
sorry for this but do not thinbk it can be the white cloudy good thing ;)

:welcome:

:welcome:

what color was the ammonia? and are you sure there wasn't any surfactants? ie; soap

the shake test doesn't work as there is a no foam ammonia
read the ingredients, and see,
there is a clear, and a yellowish ammonia and pretty colors with fragrance,..

i know, but i have to ask, anyway,.. just to rule it out,..
and good luck,..

read around the forum and see what you can learn here,..

Welcome to AC!

thanks you all for your welcomes :)
Hi al, as you have guessed I have started the cycle again due to the water being brown colour.
I have now actually found out why this was happening, it was the fishfood getting into the internal filter and staying there due to the filter being on full power ( was recommended for water circluation!!)
Anyway
I have drained the tank and washed the filter in the tankwater and now the water is chystal clear!!!

right, here are my readings after leaving the tank for 24 hours

22/04/09
tank = 127 litres
ph tap= 7
ph tank (start)= 6.8

homebase ammonia 9.5%
require 4ppm
therefore 4(9.5x10/127) roughly 5ml
therfore increase by 1ml = 1.25ml of ammonia
2ml = 2.5 ml of ammonia
3ml = 3.27nl of ammonia
sorry for all this but just to show you all so that you can comment on my working outs or anything else...

Day 1 22/04/09
ammonia = 1ppm
so add 3.75ml of ammonia to get to 4ppm

Day 2 23/04/09
ammonia =4ppm
nitrite = 0
nitrate = 0
nothing added
The green colour is VERY hard to see

Day 3 24/04/09
ammonia = 3-4ppm????
nitrite = 0
Nitrate = 0
Was going to add in tetra safe start at this point to see if there will be an increase in activities as I am assuming that I should have a least some bacteria due to the fish food. ( the first cycle went on for 6 dys before I decided to drain) but was recommended the Bactinettes by the LFS so got this instead.

6pm added the jar of bactinettes after sieving the contents as I was told that I only need the 'black pearls'.

another test (fingers crossed)

ammonia = 2-4ppm ( my eyes must be bad!!! old age)
Nitrite = 0
nitrate = between 0 and 5ppm!!! definitely not the 0ppm colour

Day 4 25/04/09
10am
ammonia = 2-4 ppm more 3 i would say
nitrite = 0??? ( should this not be showing some readings???)
Nitrate = definitely more 5 for sure.

Q1 people... can you actually have nitrate readings without nitrate readings????

Please let me know and if you have questions or advise please let me know.
Will be doing another test late tonight

Regards
Karlo
