It is harmless. It is a fungus feeding on stuff in the wood. A good boiling will solve the problem.

I boiled it and it is still there. As a matter of fact, I took the picture right before I boiled it.

An hour will kill anything. What type of wood is it?

Boil it some more, and it should come off.

Boiling is great for sterilizing, killing off that stuff and bleeding tannins out of the wood. Or you can just wait it out - it will go away on it's own.

Just let it go in the tank.The fur should disappear in about a month or so
Are you sure that that wood is dogwood? Get it, fur... dog wood. ahahahahahaha. Ok, but I thought it was funny.
